Enterprise Advisers

Cath Howard

Why did you become an Enterprise Adviser?

“I wanted to give something back that had more impact than one-off volunteering. I especially want to see more social mobility with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds getting extra help to achieve their ambitions in life.”

Tell us about your chosen career or career pathway to your current role

“I’m an Environment and Sustainability Specialist, with a particular focus on Social Impact in the nuclear sector. Whilst I’ve always been interested in the environment, most of my career has been in the not-for-profit sector (Charities) and in Philanthropy (grant making). This is my first role where I can use my Environmental Degree to reduce our company’s carbon footprint alongside my passion for making a difference in our local communities.”

What careers advice would you give to your 16-year-old self?

“I’d say try to do the best you can at your studies but if it doesn’t go to plan, then don’t give up. By working hard, taking up opportunities as they come along and doing things you enjoy, you will succeed and grow. When you stop enjoying something, you can (and will) change direction.”

What do you like/love best about living and working in Cumbria?

“I love the fact its very community focused, people know each other and look out for one another. Career opportunities are pretty good as we are a relatively small population for such a wide range of work and careers, so personal development and moving jobs is relatively easy. It’s a beautiful and safe place for kids to grow up and I never tire of walking the fells, in all seasons and weather. We also have amazing local family run shops, some great local theatres as well as friendly music festivals to enrich our lives.”
