Why did you become an Enterprise Adviser?
“To use my wide-ranging professional HR knowledge and experience to assist schools and students to consider a broader range of employment opportunities. Also to motivate students and stimulate high career expectations from all students to achieve good quality training and/or employment.”
Tell us about your chosen career or career pathway to your current role
“I have 18 years’ experience as an HR Manager for BAE Systems specialising in Employee Relations, Compensation and Benefits and 5 years advising schools for Cumbria County Council. I have also worked with HR in social housing and the hospitality sector.
“I’m a past Governor of Kendal College and have been a Governor at Grange school since 2005.
“I am a long-standing member of the CIPD, working with schools on funding with particular interest in STEM subjects, engineering and promotion of social mobility.”
What careers advice would you give to your 16-year-old self?
“Work hard, get good qualifications and take up all opportunities given to you e.g. Duke of Edinburgh scheme, playing sport etc. Learn to listen and don’t be afraid to ask for advice. Be confident, choose a good employer and, most importantly, enjoy your work!”
What do you like/love best about living and working in Cumbria?
“We get the opportunity to work for world class companies whilst living close to the beautiful Lake District which has meant a better work life balance in my career.
“Prior to the pandemic and expansion of home working, travel to work was relatively stress free compared to major cities and we also have good rail links when needed.”
