Enterprise Advisers

Mark Cant

Why did you become an Enterprise Adviser?

“My (varied) career thus far has almost always seen me gravitate towards people development roles, a subject I am passionate about. Being from Workington originally, and being a mature student currently, supporting UTC students now gives me the opportunity to inspire the next generation to understand their passions and how they can align to their potential career pathways.”

Tell us about your chosen career or career pathway to your current role

“Initially, after school, I joined the Armed Forces and served for ten years in various roles, both in the UK and overseas. Following that I joined Sellafield Ltd, the highlight of which was running their graduate and student development programmes and gaining my HR chartered status. After eight years I stepped into Nuclear Consulting with KBR and now MissionCX.”

What careers advice would you give to your 16-year-old self?

“Listen to the advice of your elders and learn from their (many) mistakes. Get a coach or mentor aligned to what you want to do in life to assist you with ‘the nudge’ to succeed and follow your passions! Also, learning and development never ends, so don’t be worried if you don’t know what you want to be in life, right now.”

What do you like/love best about living and working in Cumbria?

“I love my county! It has an amazing history (another passion), great coastline, fells and lakes to visit, and many, many very good places to eat (yet another passion)!”
