Simon Herrema
Why did you become an Enterprise Adviser?
“For young people, starting in employment can be tough. This can be especially true for young people living with neurodiversity or learning difficulties. I believe those with relevant experience and the ability to communicate that experience should do so! Thoughtful guidance and advice, coming from well tested experience, can really help.”
Tell us about your chosen career or career pathway to your current role
“I joined the Metropolitan Police at a ridiculously young age but went on to have an interesting and challenging 30-year career in several specialist roles. After retiring I worked in the private sector for several years before moving into property developing.”
What careers advice would you give to your 16 year-old self?
“Learn to recognise and understand your skills and attributes. Know that quiet confidence does get noticed and appreciated. Everyone makes mistakes, learn from those mistakes to do better next time and try hard to not make the same mistake twice.”
What do you like/love best about living and working in Cumbria?
“Friendly people, slower, gentler pace of life. Some of the best views in the UK.”
