Employer Standards for Careers Education and The Education Landscape: A Guide for Employers

6th Jul 2022 | Category: Latest

The Gatsby Foundation has developed The Education Landscape: A Guide for Employers to give employers, in particular SMEs, a clear understanding of the education and skills landscape in England. It provides an overview of the system and describes 20+ options for how businesses may engage with the education and skills landscape – with young people, adults, and the wider skills system – and the benefits of doing so for employers.

These options are grouped into five categories for ease of reference:

  1. Supporting students;
  2. Supporting high-quality teaching;
  3. Providing workplace experience;
  4. Providing expert guidance;
  5. Work-based learning.

Within these categories the 20+ opportunities include options that will support careers education for young people. CEC has supported the development of The Education Landscape: A Guide for Employers, alongside other key stakeholders including BCC, CBI, FSB, IOD and DfE.  CEC has also been developing a set of Employer Standards for Careers Education to support employers (both experienced and new to engaging with careers education) to understand and deliver best practice in careers education for young people in secondary schools and colleges.

The Employer Standards will describe opportunities to support careers education using the common categories and options within The Education Landscape: A Guide for Employers, so employers can clearly see how their work to support careers education fits within the landscape, and these two resources can best work together.

The Education Landscape: A Guide for Employers is a resource for businesses to help support their overall picture of the education and training system, using it to determine which engagement options best suit their business and what they wish to prioritise.

For employers seeking to engage with careers education in secondary schools and colleges, then you may wish to look at the Employer Standards (once launched beyond the initial Cornerstone 100 Pilot –expected in Academic Year 2022/2023) so you can understand what best practice looks like and be signposted to resources and further support. The Employer Standards and The Education Landscape: A Guide for Employers will also cross-reference to each resource.
